Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Sabah passes away

Kuwait's ruling Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah has passed away on Tuesday in a hospital in the United States. He was 91 and became Kuwait's Emir in January 2006 after the death of Sheikh Jaber al-Sabah. The Kuwait television had earlier interrupted regular programming to cut to Quranic verses on Tuesday, signifying death of a senior member of the state's ruling family.

The decision to shut schools and universities in the capital was announced late Friday by deputy governor Mohammad Taghizadeh, after a meeting of an emergency committee for air pollution.
